What if I die?

The arrangements for your (former) partner and (any) children upon your death depend on what scheme you have, whether your partner is registered with us and if you are still working for Shell. The following options are possible:

  • Partner's pension
This is the partner’s pension from your death until your partner dies.
  • Supplementary partner's pension
Your partner may also receive extra pension if you pass away. This pension will continue until commencement of his or her state pension. In this way your partner will receive more income prior to his or her state old-age pension.
  • Orphan's pension
This is a pension for your children until they are 18. If they are students, your children will receive this pension until August of the year following the year in which they reach the age of 24. All your children are entitled to the orphan's pension.
  • Special partner's pension
Are you divorced when you pass away? If so, your former partner will be entitled to ‘special partner’s pension’ accrued in the period before your divorce. Did you and your former partner make alternative agreements? Please let us know immediately.
  • ANW benefit from the government
Is your partner unfit for work or do you have children under 18? Your partner may also receive a state benefit in this case. This is provided for in the Surviving Dependants Act (Anw). You can find all the information on SVB.nl.

If you pass away and no longer work for Shell

  • Did you commenced employment on or after 1 July 2013 or do you participate in the Net Pension Plan?
If so, SNPS will arrange your pension. Your partner will not receive a temporary partner’s pension when you are no longer employed with Shell and pass away. Nor will your children receive a pension. But you will remain entitled to a partner’s pension. You pay contributions from the capital for this. This will ensure that your partner receives a pension if you pass away. We will do this only if you have a partner. If you do not wish this to happen, then let us know when you leave the company. You will receive a letter including a form (pdf) to this effect. All arrangements on your pension, including partner’s and orphan’s pension are set out in the regulations.
  • Did you commence employment before 1 July 2013?
If so, SSPF will arrange your pension. Your partner will receive a partner's pension. And your children will receive an orphan’s pension if you pass away. All pension arrangements are contained in the regulations.

Do we need to be contacted after your death?
If you have passed away while living in the Netherlands, the authorities will inform us of this situation. If you have you passed away while living abroad, your survivors will need to contact us. We need a copy of the death certificate.
